Nitrogen fixation from pasture legumes is a fundamental process that contributes to the profitability and sustainability of dryland agricultural systems. The aim of this research was to determine whether well-managed pastures, based on aerial-seeding pasture legumes, could partially or wholly meet the nitrogen (N) requirements of subsequent grain crops in an annual rotation. Fifteen experiments were conducted in Western Australia with wheat, barley or canola crops grown in a rotation that included the pasture legume species French serradella (Ornithopus sativus), biserrula (Biserrula pelecinus), bladder clover (Trifolium spumosum), annual medics (Medicago spp.) and the non-aerial seeded subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum). After the pasture phase, five rates of inorganic N fertilizer (Urea, applied at 0, 23, 46, 69 and 92 kg/ha) were applied to subsequent cereal and oil seed crops. The yields of wheat grown after serradella, biserrula and bladder clover, without the use of applied N fertilizer, were consistent with the target yields for growing conditions of the trials (2.3 to 5.4 t/ha). Crop yields after phases of these pasture legume species were similar or higher than those following subterranean clover or annual medics. The results of this study suggest a single season of a legume-dominant pasture may provide sufficient organic N in the soil to grow at least one crop, without the need for inorganic N fertilizer application. This has implications for reducing inorganic N requirements and the carbon footprint of cropping in dryland agricultural systems.

Field studies were conducted at 35 sites throughout the north-central United States in 1998 and 1999 to determine the effect of postemergence glyphosate application timing on weed control and grain yield in glyphosate-resistant corn. Glyphosate was applied at various timings based on the height of the most dominant weed species. Weed control and corn grain yields were considerably more variable when glyphosate was applied only once. The most effective and consistent season-long annual grass and broadleaf weed control occurred when a single glyphosate application was delayed until weeds were 15 cm or taller. Two glyphosate applications provided more consistent weed control when weeds were 10 cm tall or less and higher corn grain yields when weeds were 5 cm tall or less, compared with a single application. Weed control averaged at least 94 and 97% across all sites in 1998 and 1999, respectively, with two glyphosate applications but was occasionally less than 70% because of late emergence of annual grass and Amaranthus spp. or reduced control of Ipomoea spp. With a single application of glyphosate, corn grain yield was most often reduced when the application was delayed until weeds were 23 cm or taller. Averaged across all sites in 1998 and 1999, corn grain yields from a single glyphosate application at the 5-, 10-, 15-, 23-, and 30-cm timings were 93, 94, 93, 91, and 79% of the weed-free control, respectively. There was a significant effect of herbicide treatment on corn grain yield in 23 of the 35 sites when weed reinfestation was prevented with a second glyphosate application. When weed reinfestation was prevented, corn grain yield at the 5-, 10-, and 15-cm application timings was 101, 97, and 93% of the weed-free control, respectively, averaged across all sites. Results of this study suggested that the optimum timing for initial glyphosate application to avoid corn grain yield loss was when weeds were less than 10 cm in height, no more than 23 d after corn planting, and when corn growth was not more advanced than the V4 stage.

Background
Most accounts of deployment mental health in UK armed forces personnel rely on retrospective assessments.
AimsWe present data relating to the burden of mental ill health and the effect of support measures including operational, family, welfare and medical support obtained on two occasions some 18 months apart.
MethodA total of 2794 personnel completed a survey while deployed to Afghanistan; 1363 in 2011 and 1431 in 2010. Their responses were compared and contrasted.
ResultsThe prevalence of self-report mental health disorder was low and not significantly different between the surveys; the rates of probable post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were 2.8% in 2010 and 1.8% in 2011; for common mental health disorders the rates were 17.0% and 16.0% respectively. Remembering receiving predeployment psychoeducation, perceptions of good leadership and good family support were all significantly associated with better mental health. Seeking support from non-medical sources and reporting sick for medical reasons were both significantly associated with poorer mental health.
ConclusionsOver a period of 18 months, deployment mental health symptoms in UK armed forces personnel were fewer than those obtained from a military population sample despite continuing deployment in a high-threat context and were associated with perceptions of support.

Objectives: To assess the clinical-effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of pegylated interferon alfa (2a and 2b) combined with ribavirin in previously untreated patients with moderate to severe chronic hepatitis C, compared with the current standard treatment, which is nonpegylated interferon alfa combined with ribavirin.
Methods: Systematic review and economic evaluation. A sensitive search strategy was applied to several electronic bibliographic databases. Relevant studies were critically appraised and meta-analyzed. A hypothetical cohort of 1,000 patients entered a Markov model and were followed up for a more than 30-year period to predict natural history, duration spent in each health state, and treatment costs.
Results: Two fully published Phase III randomized controlled trials were included. Methodological quality was generally good. Dual therapy with pegylated interferon was significantly more effective than nonpegylated dual therapy with a pooled sustained virological response rate (SVR) of 55 percent (95 percent confidence interval [CI], 52–58 percent) compared with 46 percent (95 percent CI, 43–49 percent). The pooled relative risk of remaining infected was 0.83 (95 percent CI, 0.76–0.91 percent). Genotype was the strongest predictor of outcome, with SVRs in patients with the more responsive genotypes 2 and 3 reaching up to 80 percent. The incremental cost per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) for pegylated dual therapy compared with nonpegylated dual therapy was £12,123. The cost per QALY remained under £30,000 for most patient subgroups and in sensitivity analyses.
Conclusions: Pegylated interferon is clinically effective, represents good value for the money, and is a significant advance in the treatment of this insidious disease.

The chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of aluminum is now gaining accceptance as a viable metallization technology for the fabrication of sub-0.5 micron interconnects. The incorporation of 0.5% copper into these aluminum films to enhance their electromogration resistance has been achieved by a number of different approaches. These techniques include the sequential CVD of the individual metals and the consecutive growth of CVD Al / PVD Cu followed by an interdiffusing thermal anneal. The potentially more elegant and streamlined solution explored in this paper is the simultaneous deposition of Al and Cu by CVD. A key requirement of this approach is the selection of copper precursors which are stable, volatile and free from oxygen and fluorine. The absence of the latter two elements is essential due to the high probablity of their extraction from the copper precursor by aluminum to form involatile aluminum oxyfluoride species. In our investigation of simultaneous Al/Cu we have utilized two well known aluminum hydride based precursors (DMAH and DMEAA) with two different copper precursors and we herein report the successful deposition of Al-Cu alloys using this approach. A discussion is presented of the dependence of the resulting Al-Cu film quality upon the choice of Al and Cu precursors used in addition to the CVD process parameters utilized for film growth.

Forty-four schizophrenic patients were followed up for five years after their first admission to hospital for a first episode of illness. Thirteen (30%) of 43 patients had not relapsed; 28 of the 30 patients who did relapse did so within the first 42 months. The relapses occurred despite antipsychotic drug therapy. Also, 24% of patients had at least one course of ECT. Only 19% of the patients at five years were in open employment; unemployment was strongly associated with relapse. Eighteen per cent had neither relapses nor schizophrenic symptoms at follow-up. Poor outcome at five years was associated with greater psychological distress among relatives at first admission. At five years 43% of relatives continued to show case level psychological stress.

The selectivity of OMCVD copper films grown at 160°C/500 mTorr from the volatile liquid precursor Cu(hfac)tmvs was evaluated for various commercial 6” wafers patterned with either TiN/SiO2 or TiN/Si3N4. By processing wafers “as received”, only thermal grown SiO2 consistently resisted metallization, allowing copper films up to 1.5μ thick to be grown on TiN. For SiO2, films containing H2O, especially from PECVD, only blanket deposition was observed. However, by a utilizing simple thermal predeposition dehydration some of these SiO2 films were conditioned to give selective deposition.

For the next generation of integrated microcircuits, there exists a need in the electronics industry for high conductivity, electromigration resistant metallization that can be deposited selectivity by chemical vapor deposition techniques. This paper describes a new process for depositing copper/aluminum metallization selectively onto diffusion barrier surfaces in two consecutive steps. First copper is selectively deposited by OMCVD ontoa patterned diffusion barrier surface using a Cu(I)(hfac)(olefin) precursor. Selective copper deposition onto tungsten or titanium nitride is achieved at 150°C and 100 mtorr. Aluminum is then selectively deposited onto copper using trimethylaminealane as the OMCVDprecursor. Trimethylaminealane gives good selectivity for aluminum deposition onto coppersurfaces over a temperature range of 100–120°C without the use of a surface activating agent. A small amount of copper diffuses into the as deposited aluminum layer atthe low deposition temperature. Complete diffusion of copper into aluminum is achieved by a rapid thermal anneal at a higher temperature. The selectivity of aluminum deposition onto copper surfaces is far superior to that observed for aluminum deposition onto other metal surfaces.
